You have done such an amazing job this year - you've totally convinced me that there is a BIG place left for the art of the handmade gift. Thank you for your enthusiastic participation - and congratulations on the wonderful finishing you've done!! I know it's not easy to stay the course for a whole year, but many of you gave it an honest try.
I used a short survey as a way to decide where to house our group in 2009. I wanted the administration components to be manageable, and I wanted participants to have easy access to the discussions and postings we all love. The overwhelming majority vote was for us to move this group 100% to Ravelry. I know that not everyone who has been using this blog has a Ravelry account, so if you don't yet - sign up is quick and very easy! You can email me directly if you need help getting signed up.

YLGAL 2009? Your Feedback Please
Greetings all!!
I know that many of you are either happy to never have to see another gift knit again, while others might be putting on the finishing touches.
I've been thinking about plans for next year for the last month or so, and I'm posting to get your feedback. My first priority is to find a moderator for this group. I have LOVED being the list "mama", but I'm already getting indications that work travel won't allow me to do much in the way of coordination next year.
So item 1 - Any volunteers for managing the group? (This involves reaching out to sponsors for prizes, coming up with Challenges, and just generally setting the guidelines). Of course, anyone who volunteers will have my help and support to get rolling and, of course, more than one moderator can take on this task.
Next - I'm welcoming any and all feedback on the flow of this adventure.
What did you like about the GAL and what can we do better or differently next year?
Did you find the challenges helpful? Was the quarterly time frame reasonable? Were the rules and guidelines clear?
What about prizes? Any suggestions here? How did you feel about your opportunity to win something based on your efforts? Do we need prizes or are you just happy to participate for the joy of good time management?
And finally - group activity. I know this board was quiet at times, but in our main areas (finished gifts, monthly challenges, and Gift Lists) I thought there was a good amount of posting and sharing. What did you think?

For many of us, this will be the last month that we will be busily stitching and seaming and putting items away for holiday presents. Our original plan was to be able to take the month of December off this year, and avoid the pressure of last-minute finishing. How have you done this year? Q4 Challenge: RULES UPDATE (see #2)
A couple of months ago, one of our wonderful Gift-a-Longers Deborah (ravelry link) suggested that Q4 might be a good time to do some charity knitting, and I thought this would be PERFECT for our Q4 Challenge.
Knitting for others is clearly something that all of you in this group already do VERY well, so I know this type of giving will appeal to many of you. There is no shortage of people and animals in need everywhere, so the guidelines for this challenge will be somewhat loose - all knitting/sewing/crochet for a charitable cause counts!
This challenge will run from October 1 - December 12th.**
Here are the “official” rules to complete the challenge:

Post a link out here to your favorite charity - this only takes a moment if you do a Google search or look through Ravelry groups, but it will make for a great resource when we’re finished! I’ll keep updating these links on our sidebar for easy reference.

You’ll receive one entry for each item you donate. For anything over FOUR items you will get TWO entries for the prize drawing. (e.g. If you knit 5 items, that’s 6 entries)
BONUS - If we have more than 8 participants, I’ll draw for TWO WINNERS! -
Post your projects as you go out here, and email Marce when you’ve completed the challenge.

In your final Challenge Post tell us a little something about your finished items and please include a note about why you chose the specific charity/cause. This will help to inspire those of us who want to start (or continue) doing this kind of giving.
Yarn, pattern, and goodies will all be part of your reward for winning this challenge, but giving back to others is the real prize.

Q3 Challenge - Easy as 1, 2, 3!
Greetings again friends! This is the official announcement of our third quarter challenge. We're closer than we realize to the end of the year (yikes!) and like me, many of you still have visions of a stress free gifting Q4 dancing around in our heads. To help us along that path, here are the rules for the Q3 Challenge. To qualify as a contender you must complete the following:
1. Make Something old - finish an in-progress or unfinished gift that has been lingering in your project pile.
2. Make Something new - start and finish a new gift
3. Make Something special just for you - many times when gifting season comes, making things for ourselves is completely forgotten, so this is your chance to knit, crochet, sew something just for you!

BIG Finish?
Hello Gift-a-Longers!
I know that this time of year can get more and more hectic - school is out, kids are home and looking to be entertained, graduations, weddings, and all the fun in the sun activities we've been missing.
I want to say a big WAY TO GO for those of you who've succeeded in completing the Q2 Challenge. Today is the last day to complete your entry, so I won't count the Challenge officially closed until midnight eastern time. ;)
Many of you are still aiming to finish gifts in time for the upcoming holidays in Q4, and having seen what you've been able to accomplish already, I just know you're going to outdo yourselves this year. Stress free gifting is still our goal, and I'm positive that we can meet it!
I'll announce the winner of the Q2 Challenge drawing on Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
I'm still mulling over what the Q3 Challenge will be, so more on that soon.
Remember, every stitch counts, so even if you haven't been churning out the gifts because life priorities have changed, DON'T STRESS! We still have time to be early and on-time with our giving.

Q2 Challenge - Go BIG!
The 2nd quarter of 2008 is already here and I am so pleased with how many handmade gifts you all have already put out into the world :) As you know, one of our main goals as a group is to avoid the last minute rush that comes along with trying to finish gifts for special occasions and holidays.
For the second quarter...we're going to do some BIG gifting!
To qualify for the Q2 challenge, you must:
1. Choose your biggest, most challenging, or potentially longest project endeavor for this year.
2. Post the chosen project and it's details out here.
3. Post progress photos and descriptions (and cries for help and/or support) out here.
4. Post FO photos and details by June 30 . Email mamamarce@gmail.com to let me know.
5. Dance a jig.***
***This one is optional, but you'd be surprised how tempted you'll be.
**Knit, crochet, sew BIG!**
Each person can have up to TWO entries, and you'll get a bonus entry if your item is one that you plan to give in the last quarter of the year (October through December).

BrownBerry's March List
Hello all!
So I've let March get fully underway before posting my list! Tsk Tsk :)
Here's what I had last month:
1. Baby Cardigan/Baby Brown/His Debut/Feb 15(a rollover from my Jan list) - SCRATCHING THIS ONE - baby is here and cardigan weather won't last long
2. Sarong / Neicey/ Thank You Gift / Feb 16 - SCRATCHING THIS ONE - I started this and miscalculated yarn amounts; our cruise vacation is now over (awwww) so her next knitted gift will be for her birthday or Christmas
3. Shawl/Mama Nasby/Birthday Gift / Oct 08 - REVISING THIS; I'm obsessed with the idea of doing a Hemlock Ring so that is going be my "big" project for this year

BrownBerry's Update - 4 out of 5 done!
Who's a happy knitter? That's me! That's me!
I'm in agreement with those of you that have said this GAL has really kicked your finishing into high gear. It has done the same for me - I really looked forward to posting this update to share my excitement with you - even when the scarf ribbing seemed like it might not actually end :)
My Nomad Hat and Scarf set is finished. This gift was due for gifting to a friend in February (really due anytime before winter in Canada ends), and now I can mail it out to her this week. I'm modeling it here on her behalf. We have about the same amount of hair to contend with so I modified it to fit her - putting some extra room in the top of the hat...

BrownBerry's January FO's
I'm jumping into the finisher's pile :)
I finished all 3 of the baby hats on my list, and since the wee models haven't arrived yet, I consider this an "on time" finish :)
Photos of the first 2 are shown here and I'll edit to add the 3rd a little later.
For one of the items remaining, the baby bolero, I may consider switching this out for a simple newborn cardigan since I haven't seen the best reviews on the bolero from the OneSkein book. So to summarize...

FINISHING TIPS: A recurring feature...
I'm so pleased with the momentum of this blog already. You've shown a fantastic level of enthusiasm and I know we'll build on that throughout the year.
I'm going to start a recurring post here to help keep us motivated. Every once in a while I'll post little tidbits that will help with finishing things in less time (or what will seem like less time) and with less stress. Hopefully you'll find something here that makes the difference for you between finishing and not finishing something wonderful to give.
Scarf knitting? Knit 2 at once!
Using straight or circular needles you can knit 2 scarves at one time. Change up the pattern on each to keep yourself really interested, and by the time you're done, you'll have TWO finished items out of the way. Scarves can seem to go on and on forever, but much like knitting 2 socks at once, when you're done, you've really finished something useful in what will seem like much less time!
Trade crafts with a friend.
If you're a super seamstress and you have a friend who knits like nobody's business - trade labor and get some variety in your gifting. Take some time to assess the amount of effort for each type of item (one set of fabric place mats = 2 sets of felted coasters, etc). This way, you still get the pleasure of giving handmade, but you change up the game just a little and keep it interesting.
Knit from your stash.
This is a "two birds, one stone" philosophy that I think many of you are following already. By checking your stash first before buying new yarn, fabric, or thread you may find some hidden gems, and eventually reduce that "other" stress we have when our hobbies get the best of us. If you don't find something in there that is just right for the gift occasion...switch it up and get started on something for you!

This is a "two birds, one stone" philosophy that I think many of you are following already. By checking your stash first before buying new yarn, fabric, or thread you may find some hidden gems, and eventually reduce that "other" stress we have when our hobbies get the best of us. If you don't find something in there that is just right for the gift occasion...switch it up and get started on something for you!
